WELLS
The cottage is a
short stroll from all the main sites of this gem of a medieval city. Take your
time to explore the Cathedral and the moated Bishops Palace.
www.wellscathedral.org.uk and www.bishopspalacewells.co.uk. Stop for a coffee
or a leisurely lunch in one of the many coffee shops and eateries in the town.
On Wednesdays and Saturdays there is an excellent market in the market square
with a wide variety of craft, food and general interest stalls. If you like to
walk or cycle there are lots of circular routes from Wells with plenty of good
village pubs to incorporate into your trip! Wells does have a small independent
cinema showing a selection of the latest releases. A giant multiplex it is not
but it is a good option on a wet day. Wells also has a good local swimming pool
on the outskirt of town if the kids need some exercise.
GLASTONBURY
Glastonbury Abbey
is another famous ecclesiastical site in the middle of this quaint Somerset
town steeped in history and mysticism. If you think you are fit enough, climb
Glastonbury Tor (my, reasonably fit, 80 year old father could manage it!) «www.glastonbury.co.uk»
WOOKEY HOLE
CAVES
Learn about the
Witch of Wookey in a visit to these caves on the outskirts of Wells. Always
popular with the children with plenty for them to see and do once you have
toured the caves and a popular option in bad weather. «www.wookey.co.uk»
CHEDDAR
CAVES
As if having one
set of caves in the area was not enough, Wells has two! Apart from some
spectacular caves Cheddar is also famous for its cheese of course. «www.cheddarcaves.co.uk» In June there are
lots of opportunities to pick your own strawberries in the many strawberry
fields scattered around the Cheddar area.
BATH
Slightly further
afield but worth a visit is the Regency city of Bath. Try the Thermae Bath Spa
if you have the time (and no children in tow).

BRISTOL
Plenty to see
and do in Brunels city including a lovely zoo although most come for the
excellent shopping especially in the newly designed Cabot Circus shopping mall.

WESTON SUPER
MARE
The archetypal
seaside resort complete with ever popular donkey rides. Sadly the amusement
arcade at the end of the pier burned down a year or so ago but is in the
process of being rebuilt and now there is a new attraction in the form of a Big
Wheel. Dont expect golden sand or even to see the sea it
isnt known as Weston Super Mud for nothing but it is a
perennial favourite with kids of all ages and you can make terrific sand
castles!

A good choice on
wet days and popular with the boys (of all ages) with a great selection of
vehicles of all sorts.

FLEET AIRARM
MUSEUM
Another good wet
day choice with exhibits which will interest all ages
